On Friday Feb. 12th in the morning we decided to explore Vasquez Rocks Natural Area in Agua Dulce Ca. about 45 miles from Pasadena. In movie life the area is home of the Vulcans and the Flintstones and in real life it was home to the Tataviam Indians and the outlaw Tiburcio Vasquez. About two hours of hiking took us around the outcroppings and and gave us a fine view of the magnificent sandstone outcroppings north of the San Gabriel Mountains.
In the afternoon we headed to Saddleback Butte SP in the western Mojave Desert about another 22 miles northeast of Vasquez in the far reaches of Los Angles County outside of Lancaster. Saddleback is home to the desert tortoise (didn’t see any) and a fine array of Joshua trees.
